The Search for the Next Dean of Candler School of Theology

Emory University is seeking a visionary leader to serve as the Mary Lee Hardin Willard Dean of Candler School of Theology.

The Mary Lee Hardin Willard Dean will guide Candler’s full portfolio of degree programs, lead faculty and staff and steward the school’s budget and endowment. The dean will embody the school’s mission as its chief ambassador, maintaining Candler’s reputation for top-tier scholarship, teaching and service across the Emory campus, its connection to the life of the wider Atlanta community through its renowned Contextual Education program and its deep relationship with The United Methodist Church, ecclesial partners, denominational leaders and theological education communities worldwide.

The next dean will lead a thriving academic community comprising 40 full-time faculty, 60 staff and more than 500 students across various degree programs, including a significant increase in enrollment driven by innovative program formats. As Candler continues to educate students across multiple teaching modalities, the dean will play a crucial role in sustaining a vibrant and formative in-person community while ensuring that hybrid and online students are fully supported and engaged. In doing so, the dean will help shape an educational environment defined by innovation, accessibility and a deep commitment to hands-on, engaged teaching and pedagogy.

This leader will bring a deep understanding of the theological education landscape and the ability to build strong partnerships across a broad set of stakeholders, including faculty, staff and students; University leadership; alumni and donors; The United Methodist Church; and other key constituencies. They will demonstrate a proven track record in financial stewardship, operational excellence and people leadership, alongside a clear commitment to the essential role of scholarly research in tandem with spiritual formation in advancing theological education.
